Manchester United’s announcement of their squad numbers for the 2016/17 season has generated controversy, with Anthony Martial losing his No. 9 to new signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic’s preference for the nine shirt was well known, but the announcement was made while the number’s previous owner, French striker Anthony Martial, was still on holiday and he appears unimpressed by the change made in his absence.Martial’s response was immediate and vented his annoyance on social media.
The Frenchman unfollowed the official Manchester United Twitter account and changed his cover photo to one which shows him celebrating a goal for the Red Devils, back to the camera with his name and the No. 9 featuring prominently. Having signed the French striker a year ago for a fee which could still rise to 80 million euros, United now have a clearly disgruntled Martial to deal with. What remains to be seen is whether a social media tantrum is the extent of it, or whether Jose Mourinho has his first dressing room crisis on his hands.
